poem broadside | fruits of the world | 2021
The goal for this project was to create a broadside that successfully encapsulated a poem of our choosing. The poem I chose is Fruits of the World by Gary Soto.
Through the integration of type and image, the poem and its components should be explored and portrayed. Important aspects of the poem include mood, tone, and rhythm. The broadside acts as a promotional piece for the poem by including the poem's essentials.
process
To begin this project, I began working on sketches that focused on both the words "fruit" and "world." I tried to incorporate both of these words into images that worked with the tone and underlying message of the poem.
After my initial sketches, I digitized three of the ideas that I felt best represented the poem. I drew up the images in Procreate, and then played with formatting and other stylistic choices in Adobe Illustrator.
The colors I chose to include consisted of a palette of both warm and cool colors. I used the warm orange hues for my fruit illustration in order to convey the happy feeling of fruit, in this case apricots. As for the background, I chose to go with a deeper blue to highlight the somber tone of the poem. The colors worked together to convey the meaning of the poem, and created a stark contrast that allowed the poem to stand out.
